Kalidou Kassé

Kalidou Kassé was born in Diourbel, Senegal, in 1957. A painter, sculptor and multidisciplinary artist, his practice spans more than four decades and has established him as one of the leading figures of contemporary Senegalese art. Often referred to as Le Pinceau du Sahel, or The Brush of the Sahel, Kassé has developed a distinctive visual language defined by expressive colour, symbolic forms and richly layered compositions. His work reflects a deep engagement with African history, cultural memory and spirituality while exploring universal themes of identity, resilience and human connection. Alongside his artistic practice, Kassé has made a significant contribution to Senegal's cultural landscape. As the founder of Ateliers du Sahel, he has supported artistic education and encouraged dialogue between generations of artists, helping to strengthen the visibility of contemporary African art both locally and internationally. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout Africa, Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia and is represented in public and private collections around the world. Through a practice that honours heritage while embracing contemporary expression, Kalidou Kassé continues to shape the international conversation around African art.
