The Colours of the Soul, 2025
In The Colours of the Soul, Vincent Isambourg explores portraiture as a study of emotion rather than likeness. Rich layers of oil paint and luminous colour create a quiet psychological presence, inviting the viewer to reflect on memory, identity and inner life. Through expressive brushwork and subtle tonal variation, the work balances intimacy with abstraction, allowing colour itself to become the language of feeling.

Vincent Isambourg
Born in Lille, France, in 1964, Vincent Isambourg is a figurative painter whose work explores memory, emotion and the complexity of human relationships. Trained in fine arts, he works primarily in oil on canvas, developing an expressive visual language that balances intuition with observation. His practice is centred on the human figure, particularly portraits inspired by his long relationship with Senegal and West Africa. Rather than working from direct observation alone, Isambourg constructs his subjects through memory, imagination and lived experience. Broad brushstrokes, vibrant colour and partially erased surfaces evoke the fleeting nature of memory, inviting viewers to reflect on identity, presence and the emotions carried within a gaze. Alongside portraiture, Isambourg has developed a significant body of landscape paintings following extended periods in Senegal, particularly in the Sine Saloum region. These works capture the changing light, quiet rhythms and poetic atmosphere of places that have become central to his artistic journey. Since 2010, he has also led an artistic expression workshop within Village Pilote, a Senegalese organisation dedicated to supporting and educating vulnerable young people. This long standing commitment reflects a practice rooted not only in artistic exploration but also in cultural exchange and community engagement. Vincent Isambourg has exhibited throughout Europe and Africa. His work continues to build a dialogue between memory, travel and shared human experience, creating paintings that are both intimate and universal.
