The inaugural exhibition of Maison Touré marked the beginning of a dialogue between artists, collectors and audiences, brought together through fourteen carefully selected works of contemporary African art.
A vernissage is never simply an opening.
It is a passage.
A moment when works leave the intimacy of the studio and come into the presence of others. A moment when a space becomes fully alive.
On March 28, 2026, Maison Touré opened its doors in Sydney for the first time, marking the launch of its inaugural exhibition. Conceived as a moment of encounter rather than a conventional event, the evening brought together collectors, friends, and art lovers around fourteen works selected with the greatest discernment.
The atmosphere was deliberately intimate. Every detail was thoughtfully considered. Every work was placed with precision.
Four contemporary African artists formed this first presentation: Opa Bathily from Mali, and Vincent Isambourg, Kalidou Kassé, and Ibou Diagne from Senegal. Each, through a singular practice, offers a deeply personal reading of memory, everyday life, and the transformation of materials.
Bathily's works, composed of textile fragments, evoke quiet connections and stories carried across generations. Diagne captures the rhythm and density of collective life, working with a palette knife in a gesture both assured and expressive. Isambourg's portraits reveal a quiet interiority, faces that invite the viewer to slow down and look beyond the surface. Kassé's work carries the authority of forty-five years of practice. Moving between painting, tapestry, and sculpture, his compositions draw from the deep reservoirs of African spirituality and tradition, bringing together the sacred and the material in a language that feels both timeless and vividly present.
What marked the evening was not only the works themselves, but the quality of attention within the room.
Visitors did not simply observe. They took their time. They moved closer. They allowed themselves to truly connect with the works.
Conversations unfolded naturally, guided not by formality, but by a sincere curiosity and the quiet presence of each piece.
This is where the role of the gallery finds its fullest expression: not to present art, but to create the conditions for a genuine encounter. A space where each work can exist with integrity, and where the relationship between artist and viewer can develop with clarity and depth.
This vernissage was not a conclusion.
It was a beginning.
A first moment from which the dialogue continues, through more intimate encounters, more focused conversations, and works that continue to find their way to those ready to receive them.
