Opa Bathily

Born in Bamako, Mali, in 1987, Amadou Opa Bathily is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture and installation. A graduate of the National Institute of Arts and the Balla Fasséké Kouyaté Conservatory of Multimedia Arts and Crafts in Bamako, he has developed a distinctive visual language rooted in material experimentation and the cultural traditions of West Africa. Bathily began his artistic journey at Atelier Miria, where he explored recycled materials, particularly metal, before expanding his practice to include textiles, leather and mixed media. This early experience shaped his understanding of material as both a physical element and a bearer of memory, movement and identity. His works are recognised for their expressive energy, vibrant colour and rhythmic compositions. Drawing inspiration from the folds, textures and symbolism of fabric, Bathily creates works that celebrate the relationship between the human body, cultural heritage and contemporary African life. His practice brings together craftsmanship and innovation, transforming everyday materials into powerful visual narratives. Bathily has exhibited internationally and continues to expand his presence across Africa, Europe and North America. His work reflects a commitment to experimentation while remaining deeply connected to the artistic traditions and lived experiences of the communities that inspire it.
